Event Description
"I just got a project at an existing historic structure... NOW WHAT?!"
Mr. Donald Harvey, P.E., Associate Vice President at Atkinson?Noland & Associates?

When structural engineers are faced with the task of adapting or modifying an existing historic structure, the prospect may seem daunting. After all, we cannot control the existing materials, construction methods, or conditions, and as engineers, we generally do not like things that we cannot control (teenagers, for example). It may be hard to determine where to start, and it can be even more difficult to determine where to stop when addressing an existing structure. However, there is some guidance available that provides a rational approach to addressing an existing historic structure. In this presentation, we will discuss the Colorado State Historic Structure Assessment (HSA) guidelines and how this framework can be applied to an existing historic structure project. Additionally, we will discuss some of the topics that tend to give structural engineers fits with historic structures, such as foundations, connections, cracks, and roof structure (2x4 rafters at 24" on-center, really!).

Speaker biography: Mr. Donald Harvey, P.E. is Associate Vice President at Atkinson?Noland & Associates in Boulder, Colorado, a consulting engineering firm specializing in the evaluation and repair of masonry and historic structures.
