PRESENTATION: Applications and Design of Floor Slabs Supported Over Ground Improvement
 
Difficult site conditions such as soft compressible soils and uncontrolled fill deposits are common challenges at today’s building construction sites.  Removal and replacement of the problem soils typically involves massive over-excavation or requires the construction of deep foundations and structural floor slabs.  Both options are costly and time-consuming.  However, developments in ground improvement technologies have made it possible to reinforce unsuitable soils in place.  With current technologies it is possible to convert building foundations from pile supported structural slabs to conventional foundations with non-structural slabs-on-grade.
 
Commonly used ground improvement techniques include Rammed Aggregate Pier Systems, vibratory stone columns, and grouted rigid inclusions.  These systems can provide economical solutions for the support and settlement control of conventional light to heavily loaded floor slabs in industrial, commercial, and residential applications.  The presence of the stiff ground improvement elements, surrounded by the improved matrix soil, results in significantly reduced shear and moment demands as compared to deep foundations.  The result is thinner floor slabs that often contain only minimal steel requirements.  The structural performance of the floor slabs is often analyzed using Finite Element Analysis techniques, to model slab pressures, ground improvement elements spacings, and soil conditions to optimize slab design and performance.
 
This presentation addresses the design and application of ground improvement systems for support and settlement control of floor slabs.  Case histories are presented.

Aaron J. Gaul, P.E., Principal Engineer, Ground Improvement Engineering
 
Aaron Gaul is a Principal Engineer with Ground Improvement Engineering (GIE), the region’s leader in designing Geopier® ground improvement.  Aaron has 20 years of experience in the geotechnical consulting and contracting industry and specializes in the design and implementation of ground improvement technologies such as Rammed Aggregate Pier® systems and rigid inclusions.  He oversees design and is responsible for business development in a four-state area including Colorado.
 
Aaron received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in civil engineering (with geotechnical emphasis) from Iowa State University.  Prior to joining GIE, he worked as a design engineer for a nationally recognized geotechnical engineering consulting firm.  Aaron is a registered Professional Engineer in five states including Colorado.
 
Mike W. Jones, P.E., Structural Engineer, Ground Improvement Engineering
 
Mike Jones is a Structural Engineer with Ground Improvement Engineering (GIE).  He has a variety of responsibilities including slab-on-grade finite element analysis on Geopier® reinforced soils, design of helical piles and ductile iron piles, earth retention design, temporary shoring design, and a multitude of other construction assistance structural design services.
 
Mike received his B.S. degree in civil engineering from Iowa State University.  After graduation, he spent 8 years working as a structural engineering consultant providing structural analysis and design on projects ranging from multi-dwelling residential units, churches, schools, historic restorations, to multi-million-dollar facilities.  He has 13 years of experience in structural design, consulting, and analysis.  He has 13 years of experience in the structural   Mike is a registered Professional Engineer in Iowa and Minnesota.
